People want a cheap car that does useful things, who woulda thought? That it stars $5k below both of those and has an actual back seat certainly helps.

no argument there, just thinking about this as it related to the question on the FP about car makers making cars for people who don’t care, not people who do. This is exactly why we don’t get more enthusiast cars.

Aye, and who can blame them...but it certainly tells the tale of how the auto industry is geared to run...and how many people out there who STILL haven’t heard how crummy FCA cars can be.

Fair enough. I drove one for a month while my BRZ was getting fixed. The only place that car was any good was on a rally stage .

I have a feeling dealerships are just giving Compasses away. People are probably coming in to look at Renegades and get down sold on one.

The bottom line is that they’re companies. They need to turn a profit. Sports cars don’t sell enough to merit producing. Crossovers (ugh), unfortunately, do sell enough to merit producing.

I’m sure it has a lot to do with demographics. People who would buy the sports cars either have families to haul around, can’t afford a new vehicle, or are at the other end of the spectrum and have the funds to buy something a bit more exciting. When I no longer have family hauling duties, I’ll probably buy something a bit more impractical.

Kinja'd!!! BigBlock440 > HammerheadFistpunch

can be, not are. The vast majority of them won’t have any problems until long after they trade up, and this particular model has been around since 2007 (since most of Chrysler’s lineup) so any gremlins should have been found and fixed.

Kinja'd!!! The Ghost of Oppo > HammerheadFistpunch

Yeah exactly. The Compass hasn’t been updated since like 2009, so maybe the margins are still okay, but they probably just want to get them off the lots at this point.

The number of people who can afford a car solely for fun is far outsripped by the number of people who buy a car based on needs.

Fuck the everyman, right?

Compass (and it’s platform-mate, the Patriot) are cheap as dirt. They’re also very useful. I can pack up a sad, uninteresting apartment’s-worth of stuff into one of the Jeep ToasterTwins, and move said shit to another sad, uninteresting apartment. I can take all three of my wife’s annoying Labradoodles to the dog show in Decatur next weekend and get unremarkable but decent gas mileage doing so. I once hit a patch of ice and didn’t spin out entirely - thanks to Jeep’s FreedomDrive I.

Welcome to reality, where Miatas and S2Ks and Vettes and all of their sporty ilk are relegated to the “Hopes and Aspirations” page of your self-help book.

The front end of the face-lifted compass is, actually, quite nice.

Kinja'd!!! and 100 more > HammerheadFistpunch
04/06/2016 at 11:59

Kinja'd!!!0

It’s not the state of the industry, tho - it’s the state of the market.

Fact is, the Patriot/Compass is being built and sold WAAAAAAY beyond it’s intended production run. It’s been on FCA’s chopping block for at least three years now, saved by the fact that sales of the Patriot have only increased year-over-year since it’s inception in 2007, except for 2015 where it saw it’s first decline. People may not want them, but they are selling incredibly well.

Now, if you wanna talk about the lack of innovation specifically beacuse an old platform has been preserved beyond it’s natural death date, then you’re absolutely right. That’s an industry problem, because the Patriot/Compass seriously have not changed (save for the 6-spd auto in 2014) since they were first produced. And THAT is sad.

See I remember hearing in 2014 from a Jeep engineer that the Compatriots weren’t on the chopping block and that the renegade was never meant to replace them since its a B segment and the Compatriots are C segment. That being said...they probably are going to kill them off eventually.

Not really, unforunately. If anything, the QA on the newest ones seems to be worse than ever. They’re pretty solid overall, but more are coming into problems earlier in their lives than in previous years. Mostly related to the electronic throttle and other electrical components.

exactly what happened. Frankly, if they found a way to fix the rest of the exterior to look like a baby GC, and did likewise with the interior (the dash is new and curvy and nice but the rest of the interior is that horrid hard and sharp stuff) then this would be a legit okay looking thing.

That confirms what I’ve heard as well. The MKs were never meant to be replaced one-for-one by either the Renegade or the new Cherokee. Supposedly, there’s a new C-segment vehicle in the works that slots between the Cherokee and Renegade, and is basically an extended Renegade platform.

I’m sure the 6spd auto takes this car from a terrible car to a run of the mill normal car. If I remember correctly the CVT in those especially the early ones were about as bad as they can get.

With a 6spd auto I can’t knock anyone buying one of these for cheap useful transportation.

Kinja'd!!! and 100 more > BigBlock440

Yeah. Plus, most of them still have front ball joints that wear out by 40k miles. But it’s not consistent. None of the problems are consistent. I have a 2008 that went about 100k before the ball joints began to fail. Other than a clutch replacement and rear bearings, I haven’t had any major mechanical issues.

Mechanically and electrically, they are identical. The only major structural differences are the slope over the hatch area and the front clip.

I don’t have any experience with the CVT or the 6-spd personally, but most people tend to agree that the 6-spd seems to be a better match for everyday use.

It’s funny; it used to be that you could only get the manual or the CVT, and now you can get the manual or 6-spd, but to get the better offroad package you HAVE to get the CVT.

Starting price in Canada of $15,745 . I can see why they sell well.

That’s $304 bucks cheaper than a BASE model Ford Fiesta.

For strictly carting kids and stuff around this is WAY better suited than the MUCH smaller Fiesta.

PRE 2014:

2wd - 5spd manual or CVT

FDI 4wd - 5spd manual or CVT w/ PTO rear drive

FDII 4wd - CVT with special low-gear programming, hill decent, etc.

POST 2014:

2wd - 5spd manual or 6spd auto

FDI 4wd - 5spd manual or 6spd auto w/ PTO rear drive

FDII 4wd - same old CVT with special low-gear programming, hill decent, etc.

Basically, after 2014 they sourced the 6spd auto from Hyundai for their volume sales, but didn’t want to mess with programming it for their high-end offorad package, so kept the old setup.
